Hello all - just bought a 73 nova coupe to fix up with my son. car has a grinding noise coming from the rear when driving at all speeds. does this sound like a bearing problem. How do we begin to troubleshoot this? He wants to learn car repair and do repairs himself if he can. any thoughts?

have you check the fluid level in the rear end? if you dont know the maintenance history it is probably best to remove the cover and refill with fresh fluid. You can also put the car up on jack stands and simulate the speed at which you hear the noise to see if it is an axle bearing.

We installed new rear brakes, bearings and seals. Also new fluid in differential. Still grinds while in drive on Jacks. Rear different is leaking from front seal area. Could it be a drive shaft problem?

A drive shaft wont make noise it is a hollow tube, do you mean the u-joints?

you should be able to hear if the noise is coming from the u-joint while the car is on the jack stands. You also may notice some slight tinges of rust on one of the u-joint cups indicating that it has failed.

If it's a grinding sound, it's probably in the ring or pinion gear. That seal leaking goes to the pinion gear, so that's what I'd check first. You're going to have to remove the cover again. While you're in there, take a close look at the ring gear and spider gears too. If any appear burnt or have a burr on them, just do yourself a favor and replace it all if you plan on keeping the car for several years. If not, just replace whatever you see is wrong.
