I just bought this care yesterday, and after a few hrs. we brought it home and tried to start it. Unfortunately it would start the cart been sitting for a few years not and the guy I bought it off said it ran when he parked it. I put the battery in and the motor did turn over, but it seemed like it wasn’t getting any spark to the plugs so I went to change out the ignition coil and it still didn’t fire up. I got a volt meter and we are getting power but I just think it’s not getting to the plugs? Any ideas? What should we try next ? Yes it has gas..

Thanks
Hector

what engine is in the car? What did you connect the voltmeter to and what was the reading? Did you check the points? Did you check the dwell?

The car has a 283 V8, the reading I was getting with my volt meter was 12 volt to the distributor.. Haven't check the points yet, and I'm not sure what dwell is.

Thanks for the reply
Hector

Do you mean you get 12 volts to the positive terminal of the ignition coil while cranking? You should get a lower voltage with the key in the run position, about 9 volts. The wire going to the positive terminal should be actually two wires, when cranking the solid wire is used delivering 12 volts, when running the resistance wire is used delivering about 9 volts. Dwell is a measurement of how many degress of rotation the points stay closed and is measured with an instrument, dwell meter, and is adjusted with a tool inserted through the distributor cap window. The wire from the negative terminal on the coil should be going to the points in the distributor.
