65 Impala 4-speed clutch issue

Hello,

I have just purchased a 1965 Impala SS 327 4-speed car. The worst issue it has is the clutch pedal does not return fully to the up position and rides on the throwout bearing. There is a spring that goes from the Z-bar downward and is attached to the frame. It is definitely not the correct geometry for it to work properly. What I am looking for is a picture of correct spring placement. I do not see anywhere else for the firewall end of the spring to attach. Might I be missing a bracket? Thank you for any insight you can offer.

Looking in the 1969 factory chassis manual the diagram shows the spring pretty much exactly the way you have it. I will try to find something more specific for 1965.
Could it be the wrong spring or stretched out?

Thanks for your response. The spring doesn't look stretched, and it looks like it could be a factory spring, not like a hardware store spring. A stiffer spring might work, but I want to try to get it as it would have been from the factory. I want to replace the throwout bearing but need to resolve this first.

In your picture I can only see the bottom of the spring where it connects to the frame. Can you post a picture of the top of the spring where it connects to the Z-bar?

The diagram of the 1964 shows the spring almost parallel to the rod. Mine is nearly 90 degrees away and I think where the problem lies. I also noticed that the spring is nearly parallel to the z-bar making it somewhat useless:

I'm running out of ideas unless you can get a 1965 AIM or Chassis Service Manual or find another car close in age to yours.
I assume you have lubricated the Z-Bar at the grease fitting?
