2K 1500 4-wheel stuck in 4-HI

Just bought a used 2000 Silverado 1500. Great power. Great body. Abused interior, which makes me a surprised and busy owner.
My main problem is that I cannot get the vehicle out of 4-HI...I've checked the actuator (works), and tried all of the "N" button pushing to try and unlock the front end, but still no go.

I've scheduled it for repair by a shop that I trust but would still like to know, "What the heck caused this problem to begin with".

Any answers or responses would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a 100% disabled Vietnam vet and cannot afford to buy a new car, thus, I have to baby and repair what I have until they can't move again!

Have you tried setting it to the position you want with the engine running, shift into neutral, turn engine off, restart engine leaving shifter in neutral.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. The problem is that I cannot get the selector buttons to move off of 4-HI. I see where that may have worked as a reset but without getting the 2-HI button to illuminate it doesn't work.
