2010 Chevy Cobalt Shift Control Handle - How to Change?

Hi all!,

My daughter has a 2010 Chevy Cobalt, automatic and the black button that she pushes in to change gears has broken off. The rest of the handle is fine. The dealership told me the part is around $70 and the labor to install around $225. I find the labor charge excessive. My question: How do I change the handle out myself? Can you provide me with a video link or very detailed step by step instructions? Including the name of the tools I will need. The dealership calls the part "Shift Control Handle".

Unless the explanation I found is incorrect, the job takes about 10 minutes so that price is outrageous for the labor! You will need a 2.5mm allen key.
1. Place the shifter in Drive, you may have to start the car but then turn off with E brake on.
2. Grab the chrome piece at the bottom of the shifter and Twist it Counter Clock Wise WHILE pushing it down
3. Located on the exposed brown plastic on the backside of the shifter is a screw. Get your Allen Key and unscrew it a couple of turns, you don't have to take it all the way out.
4. Pull it off and you now have successfully removed your automatic shift knob

I also believe the price may be incorrect if the part number is 22706232 not leather or 20849735 leather
 
Okay so just to be clear: It has to be in DRIVE and not any other setting to do this? And can I purchase the allen key at the dealer or will any auto parts store have this item? When I spoke with various auto parts stores yesterday, they said the "shift control handle" had to be purchased through the dealer as they don't stock it.

the original part is a dealer item but aftermarket has different customized knobs. The allen key is something you can get at any hardware store. You can order the part, non-leather, at www.gmpartsdirect.com for $42.32 plus shipping
