2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 Hybrid (Bump/Jerk Issue)

Hey guys,

I’m a bit at a loss here working on my 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 Hybrid with the 6.0L in it. It’s throwing a few Hybrid Powertrain codes and I’m not sure where I should start.

First of all, it has 4 hybrid codes - P0AC4, P1AEE, P1AEF, P0BBD. There’s freeze frames for all of them, but nothing really looks out of the norm, but I’m also not a professional and really don’t know what exactly to look for. The only thing that looks out of the norm is the air-fuel ratio is highlighted in red. I also have a timing issue which comes with P0016 and i believe that’s throwing P0106 as a result of the timing being off. Before you say anything, yes that is my next repair. If it means anything, P1AEE has two freeze frames.

The hybrid system in the truck has always seemed odd to me. Every time it goes from hybrid mode to gas mode, it jerks and isn’t a smooth transition which I assume it should be. It also rarely stays in full hybrid mode, I’ll give it a small amount of gas at very low speeds and it goes right into gas mode. When I first got it 1.5 years ago, it would stay in hybrid mode to at least 20 mph and I wasn’t experiencing any of these codes. It’s just been getting worse and worse over time. Of course the timing and map sensor code could be a factor in this, but I’m not really seeing how it could be.

Another symptom that the truck has is it kinda like stumbles, jerks, and surges at low rpm’s. I’m not sure if this is the traditional bump/jerk situation that GM has encountered for these trucks because of the codes, but I’m just trying to share as much info as possible so I can find a solution. When it’s stumbling, jerking, and surging at that low rpm it almost sounds like it’s trying to catch a gear sometimes and it’s grinding, almost like a bad transmission. I don’t really see this being a transmission issue just because of the trending information I’m concluding from the hybrid codes.

I did have someone check out the hybrid battery itself to see if their fans needed cleaning or whatnot and they certainly did. He cleaned all the dust blockages in the vent and also cleaned up the hybrid battery itself a bit because there was a good amount of corrosion on it and especially on the buss bars. I can say that once he did that, the codes stayed off for awhile compared to before when they would always come on after driving it and resetting the codes. It seems now though that the codes come on after a stall, but I’m assuming the stalling is coming from the timing situation and the air-fuel ratio situation.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You need a Tech 2 or similar tool to run diagnostics. At 14 years the battery could be at end of life.
