Everyone should own a scan tool. Even if you don't work on cars, you feel less like the mechanics are taking advantage of you.
In the meantime, your local chain parts stores will scan it for free, hoping to sell you the parts.
Just try unplugging the connector to the BCM and plugging it back in several times in a row. You may just have dirty contacts on it and this will help to "sweep" them clean. Better yet would be to get some electrical contact cleaner and spray the connector and do the sweep.
