Yesterday the shifter button would not disengage when I shifted from Park to Drive. This caused the key to become stuck in the ignition when I put the car in Park. Today I got in the car, drove and when I went to put the car in Park I could not get past Neutral. I can shift in to Drive I and L and Neutral but cannot shift into Reverse or Park. I tried to look on the internet to see if there where any recalls on the '06 HHR and could not find any about the gear shifter. Any idea where I can go or will the dealership be the only place I can find out? Right now I have to put the car in Neutral, pull the emergency brake, turn the key off as far as it will go, push the emergency key release button inside the steering column and the manually unlock the doors to get out of my car.

Common issue with these cars, see G.M dealer to have repaired.May need shifter replacement or adjustment, also issues with ign cyl.

Sounds like you may something stuck under the actual shifter(like a penny, no joke happened to me once) either that or there is a button you can pull....near the shifter, usually has a small round plastic cover. This will allow the shifter to move. Or try to wiggle steering wheel.
