2006 1500 Chevy Suburban Z71?

I have a 2006 1500 Chevy Suburban Z71 with 92k miles. I have used the auto 4wd twice. Last time it resulted in $1,200 worth of repair. I used it agian last week, following the owners manual step by step. Just like the last time I used it, a week later I get a service 4wd message, stability system is disengaged, and the traction control light appeared. Is this a problem with the model. I can't afford $1,200 every time the weather allows for the use of 4wd. This truck has never been off road, both instances the auto 4wd was selected because the road conditions were icy.
