2005 Malibu

Hi everybody. I'm trying to get some info for a buddy of mine at work.
He has an 05 Malibu with a 2.2 4cyl. Automatic trans.
He's telling me he thinks his timing chain jumped or broke or something.

My question is if this IS what happened, does this cause some serious damage to the valves, rods, pistons, etc, or, can the chain be replaced?

it may have bent valves, has he done a compression test or disassembled anything?

Sorry for the late response Zora.
No he hasn't tested anything on it. Just got the car towed to his house late yesterday. He told me they are going to decide on whether to fix it or not.
