I bought a 2003 Chevy Malibu about three years ago. It had 80,000 or so miles on it (I think), now it has 120,000. I get routine oil changes, new tires about a year ago, a couple brake pads and rotors replaced, and I had to fix my ignition key (or some such stuff) that cost me $700.
My brother is a BMW mechanic and owns an '89 525 (I think).
If I bought a BMW, I would want a late '80s. Of course I would take my brother to have any car's condition checked out and to negotiate on pricing.
I'm wondering if it would be worth it to sell my car and buy one of these BMWs for the same price or less with anywhere from less than 100,000 miles to 175,000 miles or so, in decent condition, and with service records.
Would repairs be much? I know BMW labor is a lot, but if I were able to have my brother help fix anything, would the cost of parts be major?
He has explained things to me, but I just want to get other people's advice, also.
FYI-I'm looking for a more reliable, safe car that would not cost me more than what I'd expect to pay on my Malibu now or in the future. I used to say I'd own my Malibu until it dies, but I don't necessarily trust how long it will last.
