my 02 suburban recently lost power on the expressway, I was able to pull over safely to call AAA but realised the car would start up and still drive, so I drove to a service station and the attendant looked at all the gauges, checked the oil and didn't notice anything 'obvious' . I continued on the road only to have it happen again 5 miles down. my mechanic looked it over, checked the fuel pump-ok--changed the oil--down a quart---changed the fuel filter-extremely clogged. He didn't see anything else and the truck runs fine. Driving again on the expressway and just after going through a toll both the truck dies again..... I pull over turn the engine off, wait a minute then start it up again and continue to drive another 60 miles. Hasn't happened again but now I don't trust my truck--any ideas or has this happened to you...

I have also have that problem with my 2000 suburban. I have just replaced the gas filter that was dirty and hoped it would solve the problem. Have not tried it yet to see.
I have only had the problem when under a 1/4 tank of gas. Otherwise it doesn't happen.
Do you notice a slight hum from your gas tank? The fuel pump is in the tank and I have been told that when it starts to hum, it is on the way out. If the problem get worse I was told to have a pressure test on the pump a 1/4 tank.
Let me know what you think.

Had a similar problem and it ended up being the fuel pump starting to fail. For awhile we had to keep the gas tank more than 1/2 full or the car would have trouble starting. Finally it quit on my oldest son on his way home from a Phillies game. I went out to trade cars and get them home. Car started right up, it had been sitting for 30 minutes. Sent them home in my car anyway and drove the suburban home. I made it 10 minutes and it died again( just as you described)Waited 5, car started and I nursed it home. Replaced the fuel pump, bit of a bummer as it is an in-tank pump and the tank on this car is the size of a small kayak. ( and my son had just filled it because we were keeping the tank full). All fixed, car is running like new without any breakdowns. Looking back we noticed the fuel gauge not working correctly for several months leading up to the final failure.
