I have a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu that just decided one day that it doesn't want to start. Out of nowhere the Theft System Light came on. It will stay on and won't flash or turn off. Dashboard lights and everything comes on. So battery is good. The car cranks but the engine does not start. I've looked up problems that this car has had and many people have had problems with the passlock system on their Chevrolet Malibu's due to GM's faulty ignition switches. I tried the whole 10 minute reset of the passlock system to no avail. My husband and I tried it so many times that it eventually killed the battery, which sadly we later charged twice since then. It's a new battery too. Many people said a quick fix to this problem is an ignition switch replacement. So thinking that that was the only problem, I took it to a local mechanic shop to have it looked at. However, they are telling us that the fuel pump needs replacing for a whopping 800 bucks.
Something does not seem right about the diagnosis though. I'm not even sure if the mechanics took a look at all the fuses or the passlock system. We told them about it, but they just brushed it aside like it wasn't a big deal. If the fuel pump is bad and needs replacing then why is the THEFT SYSTEM light continuously on? Has anyone else had this problem? I would hate to pay to have a new fuel pump put in only to find out that it did not fix the problem.
Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time!
