1999 Chevy Silverado z71 regular cab?

I bought a 99' z71 a few days ago and ive been trying to to use the 4x4 but im either not turning it on correctly or it does not work. Can someone with the same truck please tell me how to turn it on and how ill know when its on, besides tryin to burnout with all 4 wheels ha. Like will it give me a message on the cluster? Thank you everyone in advance for all your answers.
There is a 2 high, 4 high, and 4 low button on the dash, i press them but i dont think they are on....

Shift lever on the floor to full back position is 4 wheel high. You should be able to shift on the fly or when stopped. Shift lever full forward is 4 wheel drive low. You need to be stopped. 4 wheel drive message will illuminate at upper left corner of dash in either high or low. The shift lever should move with only a slight tug or push.
