I had a spring break on the driver's side front of my car. The shop said that even though the strut wasn't damaged, they had to replace both spring and strut for passenger and driver side of my car.

Is this true? I thought that both springs might need to be replaced, not the struts too, since they weren't broken. I admit to knowing nothing about cars, so asking before hadning over 500+ dollars seemed like a good idea.

Springs should be replaced in sets due to them sagging over time (if one is replaced your car will not sit level) and the possibility of the other one breaking also exists. The struts to not have to be replaced, but they must be removed and disassembled to get the springs out, The struts are probably worn out after 10 years and allowing the spring to bounce more than normal and fatigue the spring.....and a contributing factor to it breaking in the first place. If they are replacing both front springs and struts for $500 bucks you are getting a really good deal. You wouldn't get the parts out the door for 500 here, Good luck

from the shops perspective they probably think the other spring is going to break soon too, as for the struts thats total BS, i wouldn't do it, it never hurts to get a seccond opinion, call around and ask how much to replace JUST the spring
