Flashing lightzzz!!!

So today I accidentally left the headlights of my Malibu for 8 hours when I went back to the car it wouldn't start so I got someone to start it with the wires connected to the battery and stuff after It started everything worked fine, but I noticed that the Odometer had changed from the Mileage to the TRIP option so I tried to switch it back to MILEAGE but nothing happens I know the button works because I have done it before but now it only resets the TRIP but won't change to ODOMETER reading why is that happening??
