...or cold)? When I hit the gas petal it sputters not allowing me to accelerate anymore, then all the sudden it backfires in the carb and its fine for ten minutes... then it does it again. I replaced the fuel filter already...Any ideas? Timing? Fuel pump? Carb? I really dont know. Thanks!!
And the choke light came on in the dash.

check the choke obviously.

probably stuck or frozen and needs replacing.

sounds to me like its sticking "on" so the engine is always choked and running rich and then as it loads down on gas it finally detonates like hell and which the power valve senses and restricts flow temporarily.

also, this is a quick way to blow out the power valve as well. might want to replace that as well.
