My son and I are building a 78 nova, complete rebuild. We have a fresh 400hp small block. We are attempting to fire it up for cam break in. The only wiring we have connected is to the distributor and starter.
We are getting a no start with erratic flash from timing light. Motor and distributor are indexed properly. I am leaning toward a wiring problem. Are we missing a component that needs to be hooked up .

You dont mention if you are using a points type distributor or a HEI or other aftermarket unit. How about the alternator, is it wired?

So have you determined if you are actually getting a large spark at the plugs? If you are using a carburetor, do you see gasoline squirting into the primary side when you open the throttle by hand?

Yes on the fuel, we have a new Quickfuel 680 with sight glass full and squirting fuel. Running DUI 50,000 volt distributor . Timing light and plug producing spark.
This one is a head scratcher. We have been building our own circle track motors for years. Never had problems in race cars that is why I am thinking wiring-sensor

So go back to basics. Reconfirm that at TDC #1 the distributor rotor is a hair advanced past the #1 post in the distributor cap. Did you properly set the valve lash? Try a compression test.
