This issue came out of nowhere. I started it up after sitting for a few weeks, it sounded like it had a skip.Installed new plugs and checked timing, all good. I shut it off and started it again and got a really loud knocking and backfiring through the carb.It sounds horrific. It almost sounds mechanical but it is not steady. I don't dare try to run it again for fear of more damage. I do have an electronic ignition installed. It almost seems like the timing has gone haywire. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks
I had the motor completely rebuilt, top to bottom, about 10 years ago. I have never had the car on the road. I've been picking away at the resto all this time. I do run it regularly and go as far as putting it up on jack stands and let it run in gear for a while. The plugs I pulled were black and sooty, not a surprise. I had the original dist. rebuilt and used a breakerless electronic points under the original style cap. A larger than stock cam, but nothing outrageous, enough to give it a little lump. I just can't understand why it went so bad so quick. I'm really sick over this. Thanks for all the help. As far as the noise, yes it sounds like something is going to let go in a big way. I'm familliar with a rod knock, and I don't think this is it.It doesn't sound that deep in the motor. I pulled the valve covers and looked for anything obvious, but nothing. Not sure if I'll try the water down the carb, really nervous about running it, but if you think it's worth a try, I'll give it a go
