05 shiter knob

Can anyone tell me the trick to changing the shifter knob on my 05 silverado. It is a 5 speed stick, doees have some damage from previous owner but I can only see a way to remove entire shifter and even then I see no way to remove the knob. Any help is appreciated, thanx in advance.
