05 AV wierd problem? p0102, 0101, and random cyl mis

Hi guys,

New to forum. thanks in advance for the time. Today I drove my AV around town in the morning and went half hour away with it. I parked it, and tried to go to Lowes about 15 minutes after shutting it down. It would not start. Finally I got it to start and it was TURRIBLE! It was knocking and shaking and smelled like eggs out of the pipe. I checked it with a store bought code reader. The first code was a p0101. The second was a p0102. I went and bought a new MAF sensor from Advance, cleared the code with the reader, and unplugged the + terminal on the battery for half an hour. then I started it and it was (only slightly) better. No power, sounded like death.

Finally I called for a wrecker, and its sitting at the shop for the morning. But it bugs me I couldnt figure it out. :confused:
 
On to shop #2. First shop said #3 cylinder has a valve out. Not sure what that means. the lady on the phone couldnt seem to explain it. Some one who helped develop several engines and has worked on the 5.3 said it sounds like the ecm is running in backup mode or an o2 sensor doesnt have a good ground.
 
A "valve out" to me, simply means that one of the valves is not opening and closing. I've never personally seen that happen on anything but a lawn mower and a 4 cylinder Datsun. Both were the result of broken camshafts. I don't think that's what's going on with your vehicle, though. Stay away from that shop. As an afterthought, have someone check your catalytic converter. Perhaps a chunk of crap broke off inside and is blocking your exhaust gases.

WELL.......I took it to a certified Chevy dealer. They did a compression test all the way around. Found #3 had 30# compression. So, the initial shop was apparently on to "something" It's odd that it drove fine all morning and with only having 54k on the engine, It would loose a valve. As thats also what the dealer told me. I was certain it was electrical related. One other thing it did on the way to taking it to the second shop was the dash said "reduced engine power". I had a similar issue with the old motor and #3 cylinder.

Hmmmm, that is really strange. How many miles are on that engine? I guess it's possible for enough carbon to build up on a valve that it could hold it open. Couple of things I'd try if it were mine. First, I'd try the "water treatment". Just get a bottle of water, and with the air cleaner and hose off of the throttle body, with the engine running, pour a small steady stream of water into it for about 3 seconds. If it tries to die, rev it up. Do this until you've used about 12 ounces or so of water. Sometimes the water will help dislodge carbon deposits. Mostly it works better for pistons that may have carbon deposits on them, but you may luck out and free up the valve. If that doesn't help, then I'd try some Seafoam in the crankcase. On your compression test are you doing both dry and wet? If you get different readings with a wet test, then it's not valve related, most likely rings on that piston. Lot of variables here. If a shop you use has a scope, perhaps they can scope it and see if there's a valve stuck open.
 
Went to the dealer today to see progress. They had the driver side head flipped over and water was sitting in three out of the 4 chambers. The 4th (#3 cylinder) had the exhaust valve slightly open and was bone dry, meaning it was leaking. There was one more cylinder that had leaky valve(s) as it had slightly less water than the rest. motor had 54k on it. Or so the junkyard told me........
 
Only 54,000 miles on the engine? That stinks. Even a Yugo would go further than that before crapping out! What is the dealer telling you the cause was? I'm curious. No way an engine with that few miles on it should have that problem. Sounds to me like a defect during assembly somewhere along the line. Like perhaps the head wasn't properly torqued or something like that. I'd be getting in touch with GM and see if they wouldn't do something to at least help pay for the needed repair of it, if it were mine.
