my issue seems to be transfer case related... looking for suggestions.
for the last 2-3 weeks i was hearing a humming sound when accelerating and could not figure out what it was from. Well, I now believe it was from the transfer case. now when i put it in 2wd i hear noise (banging) and while in neutral i can see the driveshaft slowing spin. when in 4wd high, no noise and can move forward and reverse but do not want to take it on the road because i am afraid it will break down. when i put it in 4wd low the indicator flash but does not engage. could it be the shift motor or is it the transfer case itself. one thing i have notice prior to this happening the vehicle sat in the driveway for 2 weeks while i was away on vacation and started right up (no dead battery), now after sitting a couple of days the battery is completely dead to the point that no interior light come on when i open the door. one thing i still have to check is to see if transfer case might have a pinhole where it been slowly leaking fluid. another thing that i notice is that i see smoke coming up from somewhere between the back of the engine and the firewall but have not yet verified exactly where it is coming from yet.
