Default chevy equinox electrical problem

I have an 05 nox that i upgraded the radio in 3 years ago. last week it appeared that the alternator went out. i replaced it. After i replaced i figured out what the car was actually doing. as soon as yo start the car the headlights go out the dash goes dead but the motor keeps on running. I thought it was the adapter that i had to buy for the aftermarket radio. i bought another one. that did not fix it. When i left the motor running the battery exploded. I put in a new battery and put a volt meter on battery. The voltage just keeps going up. I dont let it get over 19 volts any more. The only thing i can think of that could be is ignition switch or the computer. does any one have any other ideas on what else it could be i appreciate any he;p i can get.

you probably have a alternator with a bad voltage regulator, test and if necessary replace the alternator before you destroy the new battery
