Default 2005 chevy equinox

I have a 05. It was givin to me for free. Was told the motor was bad. So I took on this car thinking just a quit motor swap. Im stumped and need some other advice. I replaced the fuel pump cuz I was told the fuel pump was bad. 500 down for that. It started right up. I had it plugged up cuz it through an engine light. So an oreilly guy tells me I know that sound, your timing chains off. So I replaced that. Did a tune up. Oil change, plugs, wires. Still getting a loud diesel/light knocking noise. I'm not sure if the timing chain was installed wrong or if I have a separate problem. But it also doesn't seem to want to stay running. It fires right up, but if I go to put it in drive or reverse it dies on me. Now when I first start it, it will take off right away. But the second the temp gets normal on it, is when it starts to run really rough. I'm stumped and have no clue of what to do next.. any suggestions would be nice!!

do you have a check engine light on?
if you do what are the codes?
have you used a stethoscope or piece of rubber hose to figure out where the noise is coming from?
