the engine and transmission are in the front of the car so cannt see how they were effected by a "light" impact.

I assume you have lubricated the Z-Bar at the grease fitting?

In your picture I can only see the bottom of the spring where it connects to the frame. Can you post a picture of the top of the spring where it connects to the Z-bar?

Looking in the 1969 factory chassis manual the diagram shows the spring pretty much exactly the way you have it. I will try to find something more specific for 1965.
Could it be the wrong spring or...

assuming you have stock wheels the largest width the factory offered on a 2wd with sport package had a profile of 235. The 275 is 1.6" wider. You have to check when the front wheels are turned fully...
