1995 Suburban 1500 .. 5.7 .. floor mounted t-case shifter ..

When I take off from a stop at more than low trottle, I hear a
grinding / screaming noise coming from the Trans / Transfer Case.

If I accelerate slowly from a stop, there is NO noise at all.

I had a Trans.Tech at Dura-Built drive it and he believes there
is a broken snap ring in the T-Case. Anyone here who can shed
some light on that diagnosis ... or any idea what it could be ?

I need to take a 1200 mile trip soon and don't want to be left
sitting by the side of road in freezing weather.

Considering your trip I think you have to bite the bullet and have the problem corrected. Get a second opinion from a local shop/dealer but without opening up the unit everybody is just guessing.

I was actually hoping someone had some knowledge of / or prior experience with this type of noise. The Trans Tech says it's a common problem.
I have another vehicle (Subaru AWD) that can easily make the trip, but was wanting to haul a few large items.

apparently it is a common enough problem that aftermarket companies are supplying a heavy duty snap ring. Just google "suburban transfer case snap ring".

Thank You Very Much for the Info ... I will effect the repair myself, as
I am a retired Master Mechanic with plenty of equipment and time.

FYI - Dura-Built Transmission Shop wants $700.00 for this (less than a hour) repair.

good to hear this will be a DIY project!
