How do you connect an iPod through the aux jack on a 2009 Chevy Aveo?

How do I connect my ipod shuffle to my 2009 Chevy Aveo? The car has an aux jack, and i bought an aux audio cable, but when I plug them in together, no go. Any suggestions? Do you have to buy a special jack from a GM dealer?
I plugged the ipod in, turned it to aux, it was on and playing, and nothing happened. The cable I have is a 1.8m, but it won't actually play music.

if you're using a cable with the headphone jack looking thing (3.5mm aux jack) on both sides, you're good to go. make sure your head unit it reading from the aux input (same way you would have to tell it play CD or radio, tell it to play aux) and make sure you're ipod is on and playing.

your radio should have AM-FM-AUX
plug the ipod in and change the radio to aux and it will work
