what engines would be nice for a Chevy Chevelle SS?

i don't want to spend no more than $1000 on a engine.

Any of the chev engines would do... i dont know the horsepower they make but you could make horsepower depends how much $$ you want to spend. Some of the more Common would be 305, 350, 383. 396, 400( i believe), 454, 502, and 572. In the earlier part of the years i believe they had a 296 or something like that. Someone correct me on that 296 if im wrong.
