cruise control for 1992 chevy truck/ suburban?

My cruise control isn't working and I know nothing about how to trouble shoot what's wrong. The fuse is good and the cable is hooked to the throttle but, just doesn't work. Any suggestions on where to start other than a good mechanic's shop?
