Our new Equinox has the Automatic climate control System however the A/C light comes on when the AUTO button is selected and the outside temp is below freezing. Has anyone else experienced a similar condition.

Ours does that as well. I don't think it's an issue. Other GM products we have had did this also. I believe that the compressor won't kick in below freezing even if the light is on.
What is different is that if I turn off the air, it turns off the auto mode. My truck doesn't do that.
Can you tell me where your temperature gauge ( engine temp) normally runs ?

Thanks for the reply, I guess it's functioning ok. The temp is somewhere between half and 0, maybe a little closer to the half mark.

I guess it is the same across the board - Dealer told me that yes the A/C light will be on -- it just means that heat and a/c are on auto -- the "running" is temperature based. The one if find a bit confusing is when you remote start and it is cold (no explainationof what temp that is considered) the heated seats will turn on -- but not be lit. However, once you put your key in they shut off..... Well that won't be an issue til winter but we'll see.

Yes. I have a 2010. Anytime you turn on the climate control the AC autmatically comes on. I am preoccupied with an oil burning issue, so I have done nothing with this.

That is normal. Actually the a/c might kick in a bit for defrosting etc. The compressor may cycle too, keeps it lubed. Any car with a/c (before auto climate) would cycle the compressor when in defrost -- you just didn't know it.:D

courier3,
I messaged you back about the oil. Please also include any information about any concerns you are experiencing. I look forward to hearing from you.
