Because for another $6000 you can get a Corvette that get's 32 MPG highway!.
Plus, there are no Volts for sale at my local Chevrolet dealer yet so your question is completely void. You have no link to a source much less any comparison's to similar car's in this new category like the Nissan Leaf etc. etc.
I commend you on making the fools comment with there mind instead of facts though. Your question will be valid in about 3 years.

... Because 1 in 8 Americans are lining up at their local soup kitchens. The pounds have to euthanize the animals more rapidly. They don't have room for them all, with people losing their homes. People don't have medical for their sick loved ones and seriously sick children. Hundreds of people are applying for every job opening. It's rough out there.
And those billionaires you guys want to send more money to? They don't drive Chevy Volts.

If you ask me, common sense tells me that NOBODY can buy even the cheapest car with out a job. No car dealer will let you take it home with a promisory note that you will pay in installments if there is no PROOF of a steady job.

In the 90's Chevrolet made an EXCELLENT electric Car the EV1.It had unbelievable pick-up, and handling and was low maintenance. The Oil Co.'s starting to have a major fit and feared it would end too much dependency on oil (GASOLINE) and put pressure on GM to end it's production. GM ordered all of them back and even went as far as to seek people out who were holding them in a secret location. This was Truly Nazi Gestapo tactics and little to nothing was ever known about it because most of these cars were ever bought outside California or the West coast.
Chevrolet had their chance and I'm sure those who may have had one of these cars previously ,won't get on board for another disappointment from having it taken from them again. Besides the Toyota Prius and the Nissan Leaf will be the Cars most Americans will buy because of their proven Companies track record building reliable cars. GM is a car company that has now closed down 2 of it's sister companies and will prove to continually fail..................

Because its cheaper to spend $3/gallon to fill my Expedition than it is to buy an electric that runs 100 miles on a charge and then have to wait 7 hours for it to recharge so I can drive 100 more.

Well, mainly because the car is only available in 7 markets now, so getting one can be a tall order. It is not like the lots are full of them. Also, think of this, most cars are sold today with lease prices listed rather than sticker price. Because to most people the payment is what decides if they can buy the car. So when these roll out look for a real hard look at the cap cost to determine the lease payment.
I've driven a Prius before, a friend of mine owns one, him and his wife have a contest to see who gets the better mileage. It is all on how you drive it, he gets about 35, she averages over 45 mpg. But the Volt and the Prius are worlds apart. The Prius uses an electric motor for power under certain conditions, the Volt uses a battery and a small gas powered engine. As a result you are always using gas when you drive the Prius, but if you stay within the Volts battery range you are using no gas at all.
This is hardly new technology, it is for the battery but the same principle was used on diesel submarines for decades. The submarine runs underwater on a bank of batteries that power electric motors and they use the diesel engines to power the boat and to run alternators to charge the batteries. The Volt is basically doing the exact same thing.
One say you may see a car that operates the same way that modern locomotives do, where engines spin alternators to provide electrical power to traction motors on each axle.
