Are you saying you have never changed the oil at all? If you have owned this vehicle since 2006 and never changed the oil then I don't know how that could be possible and it's still running. That oil has to be thicker than mud and so dirty and black that your engine must be having a hard time running.
You are suppose to change your oil every 3,000 - 5,000 miles depending on how often you drive and if you drive a lot of highway or city driving. If it's more highway than city then every 5,000 is good. I have a new 2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Pick Up that I bought last year and I was told to change the oil every 7,500 miles cause it's new.
I still always have it done every 3,000 cause I want to really take good care of it and extend the life of the engine. I do more city driving anyway. I never heard of a message coming on that says that. Usually a check engine or oil light comes on. I would get the oil changed right away.
It may mean you are a quart of oil low cause you haven't changed it and the engine is getting hot cause the oil is to thick and dirty for it to run threw the engine properly. Your gonna ruin the engine if you don't change the oil more often. You should check the oil once a month to be on the safe side. Make sure it is clean and the level is good on the dip stick.
Rather than changing your oil at a specific milage. your vehicle will check the life of the oil...Basically your vehicle is telling you how much longer your oil is good for..Im an old school mechanic and i still change mine every 3,000 miles..Some say that is to soon, but it is better for your engine
Here is a link to better understand, hope this helped
