2004 Chevy Aveo LS? My timing belt is worn but has not broken yet. The mechanic first told me it would be about $200-250 to replace the belt. Then he called back and said it was going to be $550 because on an Aveo you have to replace the water pump at the same time. I asked if it was possible to do just the belt and he said "well the water pump will probably break when we take it out". Is this a sign that I should just break down and go to a dealership so that my water pump won't "break" upon removal?
The car is not going to last much more than another year under my new working conditions. I would rather put that extra $300 towards the down payment on a car that will actually last. I am just wondering if I can get away with just the belt. If not, why isn't the cost of replacing the belt "$550" if that is mandatory?
