I wouldn't say its a great first vehicle if you're responsible for everything. Chevy trucks are great (I own one) but the repair bill can really add up sometimes especially with 4WD models. I've seen mid 90s between 4-6 grand or so in my area (Colorado) which I think is a little overpriced.

they're great and i'd highly recommend one for a first vehicle. Right now, you can get a '95 Silverado with every option for around $2,500. I bought my '98 with every option in january of 2007, for $8,000. haven't had a problem yet.

edit: honda civic is good for gas mileage, but since gas is cheaper now i'd scratch that. trucks are a ton of fun and if you're adventurous, you'll love owning a truck.
