Sounds like you have oil-fouled spark plugs. That happens the when oil gets on a sparkplug and it stops sparking. Oil can be getting past a worn out valve seal and/or valve guide and do this, and you'd smell a lot of oil burning. Oil can get into the cylinder when piston rings are stuck or worn out or a piston is burned or cracked. A 2001 car should not be in this shape unless it has over 100,000 hard miles with bad maintenance. Take out the sparkplugs, one by one so you don't get the wires mixed up and see which one is coated with oil. That'll be the cylinder with the problems. When you see this, you need to have the engine repaired. Find a good cheap mechanic, the GM shop is going to beat you out of a couple of thousand to fix this, if they can fix it.
