ok i was told my 2003 z71 tahoe needs the 4wd encoder, from what i understand it goes inside the transfer case. ive been searching the internet but the only thing ive come up is with a '4x4 actuator' and 'transfer case motor'. is any of this the same as an encoder? am i even searching under the right part name?please help i am desperate!!!

your encoder bolts on the outside of your transfer case, i think the transfer case motor they are talking about is the same. your actuator screws into your front diff, hold on to your hat if you have to buy an encoder, they are pricey.

When you were told that i needs a 4 WD encoder, was this analysis from a result on an OBD 2? You may have to look up your dealer because there is a separate test to be a parts specialist by the Automotive Service Excellence. These folks can show you on their schematics where this encoder is located. I also own a Tahoe, I never encountered that sensor
